Animals in the Cosmetic Industry
Introduction
Every year over 100,000 animals are tested on for the benefit of humans. These tests are to determine the affects that certain products could have on humans. The testing that is done on animals allows for companies to evaluate their product and remake it in a way that won't have a negative effect.
Who's being Tested on?
The most common animals that are used in testing are mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
These animals experience things like chemical burns, skin irritation and in the worse case, death.

Who's to Blame?
Major cosmetic companies test on animals to ensure the safety of their companies. There are however alternative to testing on animals. The companies that continue to test on animals even though they don't have to are one of the reasons that animals testing is still around. Companies choose to use animal testing on their products even though there are alternate ways to see if their products are safe for costumers to use.
How Many Animals are Being Affected by Testing?
According to Neavs, www.neavs.org/research/laws approximately 25 million animals are being tested on each year.
What's Happening?
All over the cosmetic industry, including makeup brands, shampoo companies and everything in-between, producers are using animal testing to ensure their products are safe for costumers. Companies test on a range of animals from mice to rabbits. They place the product on the animals in a controlled environment to see how their skin reacts. Often the product is place on their eyes to see what kind of reaction it would cause. These businesses are continuing to use testing on animals because they feel it is the most efficient way to see if their product is safe. They test on animals even though there are ways that they could avoid this. These companies often sell in China as well. Many companies are opting for synthetic testing rather than on actual animals. This can include stem cell testing or genetically modified testing to create human like reactions.
